The Science

Microbe Shield technology

Eliminate the use of harmful cleaners with our Hypergreen solutions.

Clean Up COVID-19 EPA registered and approved for use against SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

How it works

A mechanical approach, not a chemical one

Our Microbe Shield technology uses a mechanical and enzymatic approach, eliminating the need for harmful cleaners and poisons.

Fresh Start acts as a surface primer and disinfectant by killing 99.9% of bacteria, germs, mold, mildew, and viruses. Once the surface is free from these harmful microbes, it is treated with XMicrobe to create a long-lasting surface protectant using a mechanical, non-toxic process that physically disrupts the microbe cell wall.

These are Hypergreen solutions that, in use, are safe for children, adults, and pets. Each product can be used on its own, but they work best in conjunction with one another for the longest-lasting microbe-free protection.

XMicrobe in action

Three steps, drawn out

XMicrobe is a reactive silane quaternary ammonium compound. When applied, the active ingredient forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer coating that chemically bonds to the surface and attracts negatively charged microbes.

XMicrobe · surface mechanism STEP 01 — COVALENT BOND
How XMicrobe works on a treated surface Silane anchors bond into the substrate and present positively charged tips. A negatively charged microorganism is drawn onto a tip, its membrane is punctured, and it is destroyed. The site is not consumed and remains active. Covalent bond

With its silane backbone, the cured antimicrobial polymer becomes an integral part of any surface to which it is applied — colorless, odorless, and virtually irremovable.

Mechanical kill

XMicrobe creates a protective coating that reacts to a microorganism first by acting as a sword to puncture the cell membrane, then using its positive electrical charge to shock the cell. This is a mechanical kill, so it does not create resistant strains the way chemical approaches can.

The difference

Microbe Shield repels microbial growth

The shield acts as a layer of swords to defend against microbial growth. Because of its exceptional covalent bond, the bonded polymer is neither soluble nor volatile. That unique bond results in the antimicrobial polymer becoming an integral part of the substrate.

Common questions

The technical detail

Is XMicrobe toxic?

No. Unlike conventional antimicrobials, XMicrobe does not off-gas, leach, diffuse, migrate, volatilize, or otherwise leave the surface to which it has been applied. Its safety and efficacy profile is unmatched by other products. Its surface-modifying characteristics have produced a new generation of air filtration products that can control airborne microbes while eliminating the filter surface as a potential site for bacterial growth.

How does the XMicrobe antimicrobial work?

The active ingredient forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer that chemically bonds to the treated surface — think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism contacts the treated surface, the quaternary amine punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge shocks the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the dead cell, the antimicrobial doesn't lose strength and is ready for the next cell. Normal cleaning prevents the build-up of dirt and dead microbes that could cover the treatment.

What is the purpose of the silane portion of the molecule?

Our antimicrobial is an organosilane. Silanes are extremely efficient bonding agents that can be coupled to other molecules and used to permanently bond them to a target surface. In other words, it is the glue that holds the spike to the surface. This modifies the surface properties of building materials and transforms them into a material that will not support microbial growth.

Is the technology a quaternary compound?

The sword part of the molecule is a quaternary amine. Unlike traditional quats, which lack the silane portion and therefore have short effectiveness, ours provides long-term protection and controls a very broad spectrum of microorganisms, including Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is also easier to use.

How does it differ from other antimicrobial treatments?

Conventional products penetrate living cells and kill by poisoning the organism. They act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse effects on humans and animals. Our technology takes a different approach: it provides an effective initial microbial kill when applied, and then long-term control of growth on treated surfaces. The surface itself is modified to remain antimicrobially active for a long period, unless the treatment is abraded off.
